Capsules are one of the most durable delivery systems for supplements. Not only do capsules hold a precise dosage of ingredients, they protect them from external influences that may harm their efficacy or longevity. What capsule size should I use for my product? What type of hard-shell capsule is best?
The most popular capsule sizes in the supplement industry are Size 00 (“double zero”) and Size 0 (“zero”). While both options provide good capacity and comfortable swallowability, each size offers slight advantages over the other depending on your needs.
00 —> Double zero capsules have an internal volume of about 0.95 ml, length of about 23.4 mm, and its cap’s external diameter is about 8.56 mm.
0 —> Zero capsules have an internal volume of about 0.68 ml, length of about 21.6 mm, and its cap’s external diameter is about 7.64 mm.
Size 00 capsules are larger than Size 0, so they can better accommodate dense formulas or higher-volume doses (which may reduce the number of capsules you need to fill per serving of your product). On the other hand, if your formula is less dense and/or takes up less space per serving, Size 0 may be the best and most consumer-friendly option for you. Not only would its smaller size make it easier for customers to swallow, its smaller capacity will minimize negative space when filling smaller servings and reduce the excess bulk of using larger capsules.
Hard-shell capsules are usually made from HPMC (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose) or gelatin. Although either type effectively holds powdered blends, one important distinction may impact your decision: certifiability. Because gelatin capsules are bovine in nature, products filled into gelatin capsules cannot qualify for vegan or Kosher certifications. In contrast, HPMC capsules are plant-based, vegan-friendly, and compatible with Kosher requirements. Commonly referred to as “Vegicaps,” HPMC capsules are the type we recommend to clients! However, Nutra Connection can fill HPMC or gelatin capsules as needed.
